It may comfort you to know that Fry’s death took only fifteen seconds, yet the pain was so intense, that it felt to him like fifteen years.

Community Gatherings 2 – 28 June
We circled for some time without doing much damage on either side; the long, straight, needle-like swords flashing in the sunlight, and ringing out upon the stillness as they crashed together with each effective parry.
I was only partially successful, as a sharp pain in my left shoulder attested, but in the sweep of my glance as I sought to again locate my adversary, a sight met my astonished gaze which paid me well for the wound the temporary blindness had caused me.

Date: 26 April
Place: Mayo Centre
On 26 April, Dialogue Society organized a special breakfast event at the Mayo Centre, aimed at exploring the contributions of migrants to Kingston and bringing together diverse cultural communities. The event welcomed 35–40 participants, including notable attendees William Allberry and Rashid Ali.

Breakfast and Cultural Diversity
The breakfast featured a variety of dishes from different countries, including Bosnia, England, France, Spain, Turkey, Germany, Albania, Italy, and Ireland. Each dish was accompanied by a note indicating its region of origin, allowing participants to enjoy not only the flavors but also learn about the cultural background of the food. Although the event was held on a Saturday—limiting attendance from the Jewish community—future breakfasts are planned for Sundays, though venue availability may pose challenges.
Theme and Table Discussions
The main theme of the event was “What contributions do migrants make to Kingston?” Participants were asked to write their ideas on small paper leaves, which were then arranged to form a tree and photographed. The interactive activity allowed attendees to engage creatively and reflect on the diverse ways migrants enrich local life. Everyone enjoyed the process and admired the resulting “Contribution Tree,” which visually represented the collective input of the community.

Music and Cultural Experience
Throughout the event, musician Gökhan performed on the saz, a traditional Turkish instrument with a deep cultural history. For many participants, it was their first experience with the saz, and its enchanting sound added a unique cultural dimension to the event. Gökhan, himself a migrant, perfectly embodied the theme of contribution and cultural exchange. Brief insights into the instrument’s history and significance in Turkish culture further enriched the experience.
Cultural Presentation and Heritage Sites
🏡 Dorich House Museum
Built by sculptor Dora Gordine and her husband Richard Hare in the 1930s, the Dorich House Museum served as both her home and studio. The presentation explored Gordine’s remarkable artistic legacy and how her house-museum today preserves a rare intersection of art, culture, and architecture.
🏛 Coronation Stone
As part of Kingston’s royal heritage, the Coronation Stone stands as a symbol of the town’s deep connection to England’s monarchy. Believed to have been the site where several Anglo-Saxon kings were crowned, it represents both the town’s historical importance and its enduring identity as “the royal borough.”
The presentation helped attendees learn about Kingston’s heritage in an engaging and informative way.
The event concluded as a warm, interactive celebration of migrants’ contributions, perfectly aligning with Dialogue Society’s mission to foster cultural understanding and community engagement. Attendees left with new knowledge, meaningful connections, and memorable cultural experiences.
